Though the Henderson State University community has awaited the grim reaper throughout the semester, no one expected it to cut so swift and severely as it did on Monday, 2 May 2022.
On that day, the chancellor proposed a list of 88 positions that would be eliminated from the Henderson State University faculty “– including 21 currently unfilled positions – or 37 percent of the 237 total positions in spring 2022,” according to the school’s website. “Of the remaining 67 positions being cut, 44 are tenured faculty members who may remain employed through the 2022-2023 academic year. The changes will result in annual salary savings of $2.55 million in Fiscal Year 2023 and an additional $2.79 million in Fiscal Year 2024.”
In a KARK article, Grim Reaper Chancellor Chuck Ambrose pleads that “we didn’t really have many options…It actually broadens opportunities for students and does not makes them more narrow.” Ambrose is certainly right about that, as many able students are considering to transfer.
Here, I chat with Poly Sci student Logan Little about his experience and perspective of the crisis. Then, three leaders of the Change of Heart group—Clover Wagner, Kennedi Kelley, and Brooke Faulkner—stop by to share info about their protest, which takes place today on the quad at 2 PM!
I refer to the group as “F--- Chuck” in the video. This comes from the name of an initial group chat that formed when organizing. Change of Heart does not go by this name.
